Content marketing is just about one of the most unromantic things I can think of. Sure, my eyes turn into hearts + my mouth drools whenever I see a brilliant social media strategy — but the idea of only spending my time on the Meta Network gives me the biggest cringe. As a creative + a dreamer, I want to spend my time crafting beautiful things that make an impact on both me + my spectator. Read about Sympatico in my brand house: Blithe Mitrals.
I used to feel constricted + obligated to craft content for social media — from the start of jumping into this whole solo-business thing, I was told over + over how social media was the only path to success. I had no reason to doubt this, so I became one of many folks who mistakenly believe social media marketing is synonymous with content marketing. It wasn’t until I ghosted on social media altogether that I realized two things: 1) there are other options, routes, paths than social media; 2) the romance I starved for in my work lived in being a creator first, marketer second.
Think about it: if you look at your expanders - those you adore - who never cease to delight you, their marketing success comes from a content marketing strategy that was created with passion + purpose — passion = creator, purpose = marketer. If you don't enjoy what you're creating, your audience won't either. That's why it's essential - to both yourself + your audience - to approach content creation as a creator first, marketer second. You should create content that, 1) you love; 2) your audience will find valuable.
No matter how you look at it, content marketing is a long game. That’s what folks mean when they say ‘be consistent’. They’re saying be committed to the long game. And finding the right kind of content for you is like dating — just because someone tells you this person is the ‘one’ doesn’t mean you’re going to commit to them without going on a few dates first. Date your content. We’re trying to be romcomantic, here! You like the idea of something? Wanna try it out? Give it three months. That’s how long it takes to get adequate metrics, + for you to know if this is worth the long game.

Regardless of what content you commit to or experiment with, you’ll always be focusing on two things: brand awareness + sales. It's important to strike a balance between them in order to build a relationship with your audience. You want to bring them into your world and show them what you have to offer.
Brand Awareness: content that raises your visibility + establishes on-going trust
- culture
- values
- personality
- behind-the-scenes
Sales: content that informs on a specific product or service your brand offers
- how-to
- transformation
- inside look
- process
Going back to finding what type of content you want to commit to — if you're not seeing the results you want from your current content marketing strategy, it's okay to scratch it + shift gears. You’re experimenting/dating! The key is to make sure that you enjoy what you're creating, + that it serves one of two purposes: creating brand awareness or selling an offering.
Additionally, as long as you keep going, your library of content will continue to grow. And that content will always be repurposeful, as long as you crafted it with that passion + purpose. Can you see how it’s all connected, now? So when you shift those gears, you can make the same content you’ve crafted before in a different format. You just gotta embrace the romantic creator you are, first + foremost.
Content marketing will always be profitable if you do it your way. Just keep in mind that it’s a long game - a game of commitment. Make your own rules. Show up how you want to. Create what inspires you. Focus on brand awareness + sales. If you do that, you’ll find the romance, enjoy the journey, + see the results that fuel you to keep going.
